Arianna “Kala” Brame is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, poet, MC, bandleader, and teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. Kala is a student of West African and Afro-Latin percussion and was classically trained in jazz piano at the Westminster Conservatory of Music at Rider University and Sarah Lawrence College. Kala and The Lost Tribe, her hip hop and Afro-Latin jazz group, have performed at venues across NYC including Baby's All Right, Bowery Electric, National Sawdust, (Le) Poisson Rouge, and the iconic Blue Note Jazz Club. The outfit’s premier EP, The Art of Balance, was written, composed, and produced by Kala. Carrying the torch of The Roots’ live hip hop legacy, Kala’s musicianship and lyricism land on equal footing. Kala reflects on balancing grief, self-affirmation, and the challenges of pursuing one’s dream while encouraging listeners to do the same. Introspective and vulnerable, The Art of Balance is a timeless offering that is both personal and culturally affirming.
